Some years ago, a good friend and colleague had a poster on her office wall – a winding road fading into the distance and a reminder to enjoy the journey, to not focus solely on the destination.
The economic crisis continues in Europe. Protesters line Wall Street and Bay Street. A trader in the US, a former billionaire, receives a jail sentence of 11 years, with a hefty fine and a requirement to reimburse over $50 million following insider trading activity. The US economy is not expected to rebound until 2021. Canadian growth is expected to be impacted by global woes. The powerhouses of Indian, China and Brazil are facing slower growth.
There are many contributions to this far-reaching economic re-balancing. But at least one contribution has been the drive for “more” – bigger homes, more homes, luxury cars, luxury handbags, bigger bonuses, bigger boats… and more… and more… and more…
I wonder… did those who acquired so much along the way enjoy the journey?

When you start on your journey to Ithaca,
Then pray that the road is long,
Full of adventure, full of knowledge…
That the summer mornings are many,
That you will enter ports seen for the first time
With such pleasure, with such joy!
Always keep Ithaca fixed in your mind.
To arrive there is your ultimate goal.
But do not hurry the voyage at all.
It is better to let it last for long years;
And even to anchor at the isle when you are old:
Rich with all that you have gained on the way,
Not expecting that Ithaca will offer you riches.
Ithaca has given you the beautiful voyage.
Without her you would never have taken the road.
