Big shocks and scares can be jarring and difficult to recover from. On the other hand, after our initial response, smaller bumps, shocks and surprises can energize us.
I was reminded of this in an odd way. Sparkling Hill Resort in Vernon, British Columbia has a well-equipped, European spa and a set of shallow pools that alternate from warm to icy cold water.
I had not read the instructions before stepping in so enjoyed the comforting warmth of the first shallow pool and thought, “Oh that is lovely.” After a dozen steps, I dipped my foot into the next pool. What a shock – the water was icy cold.
Interestingly, after that initial shock, I walked the circuit from warm to icy cold several more times. With experience and heightened awareness, the shock was eliminated and the jolt was energizing. Sometimes we stay in the warm pool, the “known” job, relationship, house or city, or even retain the sub-performing “devil we know” employee over an unknown candidate. We may avoid a minimal shock, but we also limit the achievement of our company, dampen our own passions and restrict our growth.
Take a step into the cold water – the possibilities are greater.
