For me and most of the organizations I work with, people are tired of talking about “change management.”
When we talk about change management, or when we create a change management program, we bring somebody in, we create a checklist, and we say, “How are we going to make this change happen?” We’re treating change as if it’s a single, one-time event.
Change is constant when we treat change as “change management,” because we treat it like a project with a beginning and an end. Then we suggest to people that everything is going to go back to normal, when in fact there’s constant change.
Rather than leading change as a project, executives and leaders need to model the behaviours and change that they want to see in the organization. Only then will their employees follow suit.
Stop talking about change management and get on with leading.
