In Feet to the Fire, I review what it means to have a personal brand and why it is a lasting requirement for leaders. We each portray an image whether intentional or not and whether conscious or not. This image and our personal brand is a by-product of our speech, dress, body language, and actions.
What image do you portray and what image do you wish to portray?
In the area of leadership, there is a set of attributes that contribute favourably on one’s brand. These include courageous leadership, executive presence, brevity of communication, and judgment.
Let’s focus on courageous leadership.
The term courageous leadership has been utilized by a variety of leaders. For me it embodies the following characteristics:
- Willing to identify issues or problems, particularly when the subject is sensitive or the opinion may be unpopular.
- Regularly encourage others to challenge your beliefs, biases, or views on the company, sanctioned project, or service.
- Address poor performance, with compassion and respect. Do not avoid the situation hoping it will improve.
- Hold yourself accountable. Hold others accountable.
- Admit when you are wrong or when you made a mistake.
- Move forward. Make a decision even when:
- you may not have fully analyzed all the data;
- not everyone agrees;
- you are less than one hundred percent ready;
- it may fail but if successful it will be better for the organization and/or its customers, employees, and shareholders.
Are you a courageous leader? In my book, Feet to the Fire you will find a helpful Courageous Leadership Assessment© that you can complete for yourself, or have someone else complete it as well and then compare the responses.
