“I can tell you one thing – our gun laws will change.” New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern made this pledge the day after an Australian gunman killed 50 people at two mosques in Christchurch.
With these words and her leadership in the next several days, PM Ardern is this month’s inductee into my Feet to the Fire Hall of Fame™.
Political leaders often discover that enacting change can be more difficult than they realized before taking office. Within less than two weeks following the tragedy, she has led the New Zealand cabinet to an agreement, in principle, to tighten gun controls. Even without the tragedy, reaching a unified position would not have been easy. The new laws may reportedly cost the country almost $140 million.
Her swift and decisive action contrasts with that of other countries where hand wringing and endless debates follow the widely published photos of grieving friends and family and protests by students and others.
New Zealand has stricter gun laws than other countries. However, PM Ardern does not accept that as being a sufficient response to the tragedy. Acknowledging prior attempts to change their nation’s gun laws, she recognizes that “now is the time for change” and knows that if she delays in taking action, the likelihood of success will lessen.
Jacinda Arden is acting with courage, conviction and urgency. Her leadership is a reminder to all of us. Take accountability. Be bold. When change is required, stand firm, stand tall, and act swiftly and decisively.
