Free Your Mind

Lorraine MoorePersonal Effectiveness

I am in Edmonton celebrating the birth of our latest grandchild, baby cuddling, and jumping on the trampoline and other fun activities with his 3-year-old brother.

Edmonton Public Library (EPL) provides a free book and library card to each child. As our daughter and grandchildren are as avid of readers as we are, the 5-day-old babe already has his first library card and a new book to add to the family collection.

EPL has a slogan, Free Your Mind. The phrase and psychedelic motif are appealing to me and reminded me of the multiple benefits of freeing one’s mind. Warren Buffett endorses the benefits of a schedule largely free of scheduled meetings and commitments. He taught Bill Gates to consider scheduling dream time.

Candidly, I had been feeling somewhat uncomfortable, even guilty, about my lack of work commitments this week and next. I am accustomed to rather fully scheduled and structured work days. And I thrive on that.

I love having a sense of accomplishment. When I trade work days for a hike in the mountains or paddle boarding on a lake, I am highly energized at day’s end. But I needed to be reminded that I also relish down time, free time and any and all time outdoors.

Later today, when the 3-year-old wakes from his nap, we are going to return to the trampoline and spend some time finding shapes in the clouds.
