Whenever I fly through Toronto’s Pearson Airport, it is great fodder for business advice.
As a Global Entry, NEXUS and TSA PreCheck traveller, I was pleased to see the ITD OSS notification on my boarding pass. Originating in DC, I would be flying through Pearson on my return flight, and this notification would enable me to pass more easily through the airport.
Implemented in 2018 in Montreal, Toronto and other Canadian airports, the stated intention was to attract more customers to transit through these airports by offering streamlined travel. In theory, upon arriving from the US, I would not have to exit a secure area, only to go through security one more time. This was particularly appealing as TSA PreCheck in the US meant no removing shoes, digging out toiletries, etc. Oh, but only if it worked.
In Canada, even with NEXUS and a business class seat, I would not be afforded the same conveniences as I had in the US.
Staff at Pearson did not know what ITD OSS meant. They were not able to direct me to my connection in a way that would avoid leaving the secure area. There was no designated signage. So, I followed the well-placed signs to Connections and NEXUS which (surprise!) led me out to the common area. I then had to go through security for the second time that day, and this time, I had to dig out my toiletries.
The idea for expedited transfer is sound. It is certainly appealing to frequent travellers like me. And if it worked, it might achieve its intended goal of attracting more travellers to use Pearson and other participating airports.
