Like many of you, much of my life has been traversed in what often seemed to be a race. From the time I was a teenager, I had a packed schedule and juggled part-time jobs, schoolwork, recreation, etc. Through my 20s, 30s, 40s, and beyond, my friends would tell me that they tired just listening to what I had on the go.
For the most part, I thrived at that pace. I enjoy a variety of experiences, diverse people, new places, and considerable variety in activities. However, at times, the pace would catch up with me and I would land in bed with a virus of some sort. I also recall lunch with a friend when I felt a pang as she told me about taking the entire summer off to spend time at a family cottage in Ontario. She was and is a highly successful serial entrepreneur. And yet, she had learned how to incorporate a summer off with her boys and other family members and still maintain an active business.
I pushed against the idea of doing that myself. I rationalized that my one or two weeks off here and there were enough. Occasionally, I started to take extended periods of time off to travel to other destinations. While doing so, I consistently continued my client work.
I have seen the benefits of a pause and I extolled the virtues to others. This year I am taking a piece of my own advice. I will be off for much of August, fishing in open ocean water, returning to Ontario to visit family after an extended Covid absence, and heading to New York to see Springsteen on Broadway
The last 18 months have been complex, anxiety provoking, reflective, chaotic, fatiguing, and confusing for everyone. I hope many of you can hit pause this summer, whether it is a single weekend away or a backyard barbeque with friends and family. Enjoy reconnecting with friends, family, and business colleagues.
