At a presentation to one of my CEO peer groups, a board chair shared a story from when he was the CEO of a multimillion-dollar, multinational organization. One of the organization’s suppliers overpaid them by more than a million dollars.

The CFO brought him that cheque and explained, “They’ve overpaid us. We’re going to be doing future business with them, so eventually, they will owe us this much money. Then the payment will be appropriate. But they don’t owe us this money yet. What should I do?”

With no hesitation whatsoever, he said, “You return the cheque, and you return the cheque to them immediately.”

That is an unwavering commitment to integrity.
