One week ago I held my new grandchild – a gorgeous and healthy boy. In a moment of grace, time stopped. I could have spent the entire day and perhaps subsequent days, simply sitting quietly and holding him. For those of you who know me well, that stillness may be hard to envision. 🙂
As it is summer, and hopefully an opportune time for most of you to experience even a brief period of downtime, I pose this question – when does time stop for you?
It could be standing at the water’s edge… It may be traversing a black diamond ski run…Re-watching one of your favourite movies… Standing at the edge of the tallest diving board…Waiting, poised to see if the white ball will drop into that little cup… Or simply admiring a double rainbow against a black sky.
It has been said that art stops time. I remember the first time I sat on a bench in a museum. I was at the Jeu du Paume – one of my favourite galleries. We were viewing a Renoir exhibit and it was simply breathtaking. Before that day, I thought museum benches were there for weary tourists and bored children. As I dropped to the cushion in awe, time stopped.
What suspends time for you? If you cannot identify anything, I encourage you to cast your mind back to your childhood. If there were instances in which you lost yourself, there is a hint.
It may be the miracle of the new babe in our family… It may be recalling that long ago day at the museum… It may be the warm days of summer…Whatever the trigger, I believe we are meant to experience these moments of grace, so I urge you to uncover yours.
