A New Lens on Diversity

Lorraine MooreLeadership, Operational Excellence

The conversation about diversity within organizations continues. Unfortunately, it’s become a tiresome conversation for many people as it’s been going on for such a long period of time. Another similar conversation is the one centered around generations, in particular, millennials.

I want to talk about both of these. First, let’s talk about diversity.

The best diversity is achieved through diversity of thought. And yet, often in organizations, we think we need greater diversity only in how the people around the table look and perhaps even the languages they speak. When we’re thinking and acting in this narrow way, we miss understanding the diversity and differences we may already have at the table in terms of experience, ways of viewing things, and ways of processing information. My best clients look for the diversity that already exists within the organization, and they exploit that.

The second consideration is Millennials. Millennials are not all the same. The characteristics they display may not be entirely generational or as a result of gender. It’s often simply who they are as individuals.

Ideally, organizations ask, “Who is this person and what strengths and gaps are they demonstrating?” and “What are the best attributes of this team in front of me? What experiences and perspectives are we missing from the team?” These questions provide more powerful lenses than those filtered by generational labels or visible ethnic differences.
