Diversity: Creating a Beautiful Symphony

Lorraine MooreLeadership, Team Effectiveness

Our house is filled with fun chaos and noise as seven family members are visiting us this week. They range from 2 to 47 and so there are lots of differing games, food choices, sleep schedules, etc. Yesterday by 1:00 pm we had served and cleaned up from a big brunch, set the table for dinner, prepared homemade rolls, cookies, brownies, vegetables for roasting and a roast plus played hide and seek. It has been a few years since that level of activity was the standard in our house but did not take long for us to adapt again.

This joyful, sometimes noisy and, at times, chaotic environment reminds me of how some client organizations thrive. These organizations embrace or, in some cases, seek out a workforce that is varied in age, opinion, and experiences. They support debate and differing ideas and waste little time tolerating labels such as millennials, boomers, or Gen X, Y or Z. Google employs mathematicians, scientists, musicians, developers, artists, and individuals with business degrees as well as those with PhDs in physics.

What would your employees say if I surveyed them on the diversity of opinion, the level of tolerance for divergent views, ages and ethnicity in your team(s)? Would they say that they work in an environment that not only enables but encourages them to be at their best?

In my experience, some organizations structure a diverse workforce through their recruiting and talent management practices but they have not taken the next step. They have not yet enhanced and furthered their leadership practices to create the beautiful symphony that lies dormant within.

Summer can be an excellent time of year to gather feedback on the level of employee engagement, the tolerance for diversity and just as importantly, the healthy leadership behaviours and those that need to change. I am working with several clients this summer to gather this data so that we can commence with new practices in the fall.

My clients accelerate their results – increasing profitability, leadership performance, innovation, and accountability. I would love to discuss how I might assist you with employee engagement, diversity and healthy leadership. Contact me today.
